Polar Bear Day

A poster for International Polar Bear Day, where a thin line of melting ice is all that separates a polar bear from a darkening Earth.

Designed for 27 February, International Polar Bear Day, first marked by Polar Bears International in 2011 to draw attention to the effects of global warming on Arctic ecosystems. I reduced the idea to a single visual metaphor: the bear stands on a cracking strip of ice that doubles as the horizon, while the Earth sinks into darkness beneath it. A limited palette of ice blue, white, navy and black keeps the message readable from a distance.
